What Is CBD?

If you’re familiar with hemp products, you’ve likely heard of CBD and its alleged therapeutic properties. But you may be wondering: What is CBD? And what health concerns is it good for? Read on to learn everything you need to know about what CBD is, how it works, how it helps the body and mind, and what types of products might work for you.

CBD, Defined

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the dominant compound in the hemp plant, where it is synthesized under natural growing conditions in reaction to heat and light. CBD is one of over 100 phytocannabinoids found in hemp, which are naturally-occurring, chemical compounds that form the active ingredients found in cannabis products.

Will CBD Get Me High? CBD vs THC

The short answer is no--CBD will not cause any psychoactive effects that alter thought or perception. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, unlike other hemp compounds such as Delta 8 and Delta 9 that produce mind-altering effects. Though CBD benefits the mind in many ways, it won’t impair your ability to go about your day as usual, making it an appealing option for those who need a wellness boost while maintaining mental clarity.

How Does CBD Work?

Scientists suggest that CBD works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is a network of receptors and neurotransmitters that spreads throughout the body and brain. Within the ECS, CBD is believed to interact with two different types of receptors:

  • CB1 receptors are located in the brain’s central nervous system, and are thought to regulate processes such as mood, sleep, stress, cognition, and other cognitive functions and aspects of our mental health.
  • CB2 receptors are located in the immune system, which makes them important to regulating inflammation throughout the body, and to managing inflammation-related discomfort.

When it enters the body, CBD interacts with these receptors in a way that allows them to balance the physiological processes CB1 and CB2 control. It helps these receptors regulate the aforementioned bodily functions, and alerts the ECS when any of those processes are thrown off balance.

How Can CBD Help Me?

Scientists suggest that CBD may benefit the following aspects of our health:

  • Discomfort & Inflammation
  • Digestion
  • Skin Health
  • Mood & Stress
  • Sleep
  • Fatigue

And much, much more.

Broad Spectrum CBD, Full Spectrum CBD & Isolate

There are three types of CBD:

  • Full Spectrum CBD contains all of the naturally-occurring compounds found in hemp, including CBD, terpenes, and 0.3% THC. Though this amount of THC is non-psychoactive, some customers prefer full spectrum because they believe these compounds synergize to produce an “entourage effect.”
  • Broad Spectrum CBD, which incorporates CBD alongside all of the compounds that accompany it in hemp--except for THC.
  • CBD Isolate, which contains CBD only.
